Bengaluru recently hosted the 16th Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Cricket Association for the Blind in India (CABI). The event celebrated India’s historic win at the Women’s Blind Cricket World Cup and laid out exciting plans for the future of the sport.
A key highlight of the meeting was the launch of the Bharat Blind Cricket League (BBCL) 2026. This league aims to elevate blind cricket in India, similar to the impact the Indian Premier League had on mainstream cricket. It seeks to provide a national platform for visually impaired cricketers, promising more visibility and career opportunities.
The state cricket associations fully supported the BBCL, viewing it as a vital step to broaden the sport’s reach and attract sponsors, broadcasters, and fans.
Officials believe this league will significantly enhance the recognition of visually impaired athletes and create new avenues in media exposure and employment. The BBCL could become a landmark development for blind cricket in India.
At the AGM, Ganga Kadam, the Vice-Captain of the Indian Women’s Blind Cricket Team, was appointed as the Brand Ambassador for Hingoli Yellow Gold, associated with Maharashtra’s turmeric industry. Her role was celebrated as a proud moment for women’s blind cricket, drawing positive reactions from attendees.
The meeting also reflected on the Indian Women’s Blind Cricket Team’s significant win at the inaugural Women’s Blind Cricket T20 World Cup held in Sri Lanka. This achievement is recognized as a turning point for inclusive sports in India, inspiring many visually impaired individuals to engage in sports.
Dr. Mahantesh Ghativalappa Kivadasannavar, CABI’s Chairman, emphasized that blindness should never limit one’s potential. He shared that the upcoming BBCL is crucial for positioning India as a leader in blind cricket. He believes this initiative will motivate countless people while fostering a supportive environment for visually impaired athletes.
Grassroots growth in blind cricket was another key topic at the AGM. State associations reported increased participation in domestic tournaments and coaching camps. This rise in the sport’s popularity indicates that more visually impaired players are getting opportunities to compete at various levels.
CABI operates under the Samarthanam Trust for the Disabled, which focuses on empowering visually impaired individuals through sports. Thousands of blind cricketers across India aspire to showcase their talents, and CABI aims to create equal opportunities for them. Sport not only fosters achievement but also enhances social inclusion and dignity for persons with disabilities.
