Exciting News: Casey Appointed Leahy Distinguished Fellow at the University of Scranton

SCRANTON — Bob Casey, a well-known figure in Pennsylvania politics, is starting a new chapter as a Leahy Distinguished Fellow in Public Service at the University of Scranton. After serving for 18 years in the U.S. Senate and a long career in various government roles, Casey is eager to share his experience with students.

As a native of Scranton and the son of former Pennsylvania Governor Robert P. Casey Sr., Casey has a deep connection to his home state. His career included two terms as state auditor general, a role as state treasurer, and three terms in the U.S. Senate. Throughout his time in these offices, he focused on legislation that improved the lives of families, children, and the elderly. His most recent tenure ended in January after a close election loss to Republican Dave McCormick.

Casey brings a valuable perspective, influenced by his Jesuit education at Scranton Preparatory School and the College of the Holy Cross. University President Rev. Joseph G. Marina expressed confidence that Casey will infuse his Jesuit values into his new role.

The Leahy Fellowship, supported by university benefactors Edward and Patricia Leahy, allows Casey to mentor students interested in public service careers. He will also work with the university’s Center for Ethics and Excellence in Public Service, advising on different programs and outreach initiatives.

In addition to mentoring, Casey will provide insights on pressing issues like health care, aging, and government accountability. This engagement allows him to connect not only with students but also with the broader community through lectures and seminars.

Recent trends show a growing desire among younger generations for careers in public service, reflecting a realization of its importance. According to a survey by the Center for Civic Engagement, about 70% of college students expressed interest in public service careers, highlighting the relevance of Casey’s new position.
