MENDOCINO CO., 4/14/26 — This Friday, the Consolidated Tribal Health Project will kick off the construction of a new 14,000-square-foot facility focused on behavioral health and dental care in Redwood Valley. This project aims to improve healthcare access for Native and rural communities in Mendocino County, while also offering culturally sensitive services.
The new facility will include intensive outpatient therapy and medication-assisted treatment. It will also feature 16 dental workspaces on the second floor, which will help meet the rising need for dental services in the area, particularly preventative care.
Funding for the project comes from a mix of state, tribal, and private sources. Notably, over $9 million has been allocated from California’s Behavioral Health Continuum Infrastructure Program. Additionally, the project received federal New Markets Tax Credit financing, potentially providing up to another $9 million. A $100,000 grant from the Yuhaaviatam of San Manuel Nation also contributed to the facility’s design costs. Health project representatives emphasize that these efforts showcase the importance of intertribal collaboration in enhancing healthcare access. This project is backed by eight Tribal communities and has been providing culturally affirming care for more than 40 years.
Interestingly, studies show that culturally aligned healthcare services can significantly improve health outcomes in underserved populations. According to a 2023 report from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, culturally competent care increases patient satisfaction and reduces health disparities.
