Big news is coming for fans of tabletop roleplaying games! Critical Role, the popular actual play series, is making some exciting changes. Their fourth campaign is set to kick off on October 2. This time, they’re stepping away from the familiar world of Exandria to explore an entirely new setting, which opens up a world of possibilities.
In a surprising twist, Matthew Mercer, the founding member and beloved Game Master, won’t be leading this new adventure. Instead, Brennan Lee Mulligan from Dimension 20 will take the reins. This marks a significant shift for the series, as Mulligan will be the primary Game Master for the entire campaign. Critical Role is highlighting this move as a bold evolution for the franchise, paving the way for fresh legends in a brand-new world.
Travis Willingham, co-founder and CEO of Critical Role Productions, expressed excitement about Mulligan stepping in. He said they’ve been longtime fans of Mulligan and felt he was the right choice to guide the community into this new chapter.
As the group celebrates its tenth anniversary, fans have been curious about the future of Critical Role. The show has become a cultural powerhouse, significantly boosting the tabletop gaming scene since they began livestreaming their Dungeons & Dragons sessions in 2015. They’ve since branched out into animated series, comics, and a variety of other projects.
It’s also worth noting that Critical Role is working on a new video game and their own tabletop system called Daggerheart, which has been tested in recent mini-series. However, it’s still uncertain if the new campaign will use Daggerheart or stick with Dungeons & Dragons.
Brennan Mulligan’s addition as Game Master brings an intriguing element to the series. Known for his creativity in Dimension 20, he recently sold out Madison Square Garden for a live performance, showcasing his appeal. This transition feels like a crossover event in the tabletop realm, as both Critical Role and Dimension 20 have amassed dedicated followings.
Concerns about change are natural, especially as Mercer hinted at moving towards a mentoring role in the future. He explained that while some may fear losing their favorite characters, the goal is to introduce new stories and faces to the community. “It’s less about us going away and more about bringing more friends into the fold,” Mercer said, emphasizing a positive outlook for what’s to come.
The third campaign has ended, with all episodes available on their YouTube channel and subscription service. New episodes of Critical Role will be livestreamed on platforms like Beacon, Twitch, and YouTube once Campaign 4 begins on October 2.
