Stephen Curry, the star player of the Golden State Warriors, is taking on an exciting new role at his old school, Davidson College. He will be the assistant general manager for the basketball programs. This makes him the first active player in major U.S. sports to hold a job with an NCAA team in this capacity.
Curry played three seasons at Davidson from 2006 to 2009. In his new position, he will use his valuable experience to support both the men’s and women’s basketball teams. He’ll collaborate with general manager Austin Buntz, who has a background with Under Armour, where Curry has had a significant relationship since 2013.
Alongside his work at Davidson, Curry and his wife, Ayesha, will help launch a major fund for the basketball programs. This initiative, supported by longtime Davidson fans, aims to bolster the teams for years to come. Matt Berman, another Davidson alum who played soccer, will also join Curry as an assistant GM.
Expressing his excitement, Curry said, “The Davidson experience is top notch. I want talented, high character student-athletes to have that same experience I had.” During his time at Davidson, Curry dazzled fans by setting the NCAA single-season record for three-pointers. He was named conference player of the year twice and was picked 7th overall in the 2009 NBA draft by the Warriors.
Since then, he has become a future Hall of Famer, winning two MVP awards and four championships in his 16 seasons with the Warriors. In 2022, he returned to Davidson to finish his degree, graduating as part of the class of 2010 and receiving induction into the school’s Hall of Fame.
This move by Curry follows a similar decision by retired NFL quarterback Andrew Luck, who took on a general manager role at Stanford last year. Like Luck, Curry is now giving back to the community that helped shape his career.
