The “DA BUX” Double Up Food Bucks program is making a big impact in Hawaii. This program helps people who use Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits buy more fresh fruits and vegetables. Now, it’s available at all Foodland stores across the state.
Foodland is a popular choice for SNAP users, making this expansion key for getting fresh, local produce into more homes. According to the Big Island food bank, many SNAP shoppers prefer Foodland. Expanding the program to more stores helps ensure families have easy access to healthy food.
Food Basket officials say that making “DA BUX” available at all Foodland locations will reduce confusion for shoppers. SNAP recipients using “DA BUX” get a special card. They swipe it before their EBT card at checkout to get half off qualifying locally grown fruits and vegetables.
In 2024, Hawaii committed $1.5 million to “DA BUX,” the largest investment in the program’s history. This commitment helps to ensure the program’s stability. The program also relies on federal funds through the Gus Schumacher Nutrition Incentive Program, which requires local sources to match funding.
Currently, the program is secure until the end of 2026, but continuous fundraising will be vital for its growth. Plans for more expansions include new food hubs and grocery stores joining later this year.
Before this latest expansion, “DA BUX” was already available at 13 locations on Kauai, such as:
- Big Save Market in ʻEleʻele, Hanalei, Kapaʻa, Kōloa, and Waimea.
- Hale Puna Farmers Market in Waimea.
- Kīlauea Market + Cafe.
- Mālama Kauaʻi Food Hub in Līhuʻe.
- Times Supermarket in Līhuʻe.
With the rising cost of living, access to affordable, healthy food is crucial. A recent study shows that nearly 20% of Hawaiian households struggle with food insecurity, highlighting the importance of programs like “DA BUX.”
Social media around the program shows excitement and appreciation from users who share their experiences. Many users express gratitude for the savings they gain, allowing families to eat more healthily.
