What’s in a name?
Denis Villeneuve is back with “Dune: Part Three”. Initially rumored to be called “Dune Messiah,” this film will follow Paul Atreides as he claims the role of emperor. It’s officially listed as “Dune: Part Three” on Rentrak.
Exciting news! The film will feature Imax shots, though not entirely filmed with Imax cameras. This approach follows Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey,” the first movie fully made with these special cameras.
Imax CEO Richard Gelfond hinted in a CNBC interview that Villeneuve’s next work might be fully filmed in Imax, but there seems to have been a mix-up. While discussing Villeneuve’s future projects, he spoke highly of the director’s creativity, hoping Villeneuve will also take on the James Bond franchise for Amazon MGM Studios.
Gelfond shared that this summer’s blockbusters have performed well in Imax. For example, “F1” made 23% of its opening weekend earnings from Imax showings, and “Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning” garnered 20% during its initial weeks. He emphasized that even though Imax screens are less than 1% of total cinema screens, they deliver significant box office returns.
Filming for “Dune: Part Three” is set to start soon. Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya will return, and Jason Momoa is confirmed to reprise his role from the first “Dune” film.
Villeneuve has previously stated that he doesn’t see this new installment as part of a trilogy. He views the first two films as a pair, completing the adaptation of the original book. “If I do a third one, it’s to create something new, with its own identity,” he said.
Bruce Markoe, senior vice president of post-production at Imax, explained the difference between films shot with Imax cameras and those simply adapted for the format. “Movies shot with our cameras offer a unique experience,” he said, emphasizing the collaboration between filmmakers and Imax throughout production.
“Dune: Part Three” is aimed for a December 2026 release.
In recent social media trends, fans express excitement about the film’s progression, eagerly awaiting further updates and teasers as filming begins. With its rich themes and stunning visuals, this next chapter is highly anticipated in the cinema community.
