We’re excited to share that Denise O’Shea will take on the role of Dean of University Libraries starting October 20, 2025!
Denise has been an essential part of Montclair since 2011, bringing fresh ideas and a strong work ethic. She has held various positions, including Head of Access Services and Resource Sharing, Associate Dean for Collections and Discovery, and most recently, Interim Dean. Notably, she was instrumental in merging the Bloomfield and Montclair libraries and updated our library system to WorldCat. She also introduced popular initiatives like therapy dogs, BookScan stations, and the Pop Picks lounge for students.
With over 20 years of experience in library services and technology, Denise’s background includes work at the New York Public Library and the New York Academy of Medicine, where she helped innovate digital tools for broader information access.
As a first-generation college graduate from Passaic High School, Denise earned degrees from Rutgers and Montclair State University, plus a library leadership certificate from Harvard. Outside the library, she loves mystery novels, music, travel, and collecting vinyl records—a nod to her DJ days.
Congratulations to Dean O’Shea on this well-deserved appointment!
Interestingly, recent data shows that libraries are becoming increasingly vital to community life. According to the American Library Association, more than 90% of Americans believe public libraries improve the quality of life in their communities. This highlights the importance of leaders like Denise who push for innovation and accessibility in library services.
With her track record and commitment, Denise is expected to further enhance Montclair’s library system, making it a key resource for students and the wider community. As library roles expand in the digital age, her experience in integrating technology will undoubtedly help bridge traditional library services with modern needs.
