COLUMBUS — Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine recently announced a significant investment: over $200 million from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. This funding is part of the Rural Health Transformation Program aimed at improving healthcare in rural Ohio.
Rural communities in Ohio face serious health challenges. According to the Ohio Chronic Disease Atlas 2025, residents in these areas have higher rates of chronic illnesses and struggle to access specialty care. Often, they are far from medical services, making it tough to get preventive care.
The Rural Health Transformation Program aims to tackle these issues. It plans to build on existing efforts to make healthcare more accessible. Key areas of focus include expanding the workforce, modernizing facilities and technology, and supporting innovative healthcare models that deliver quality care closer to home.
One exciting initiative is the expansion of school-based health centers. These centers will help provide better care for kids in rural areas. The program will also extend the OhioSEE vision care initiative to more students, ensuring they receive necessary eye care. Moreover, it aims to decrease infant mortality rates by increasing evidence-based home visiting services in these communities.
Another vital component of the plan is workforce development. Ohio will create the Rural Healthcare Workforce Pipeline, which connects healthcare providers with educational institutions. By doing this, the state hopes to keep medical professionals in rural areas, fostering long-term employment opportunities.
Additionally, the program will introduce Rural Patient Health Innovation Hubs. These hubs will offer integrated care by partnering with local hospitals and specialists, creating a network that brings quality healthcare services to rural residents.
