Now, in 2025, Lawlar still hasn’t made it to the big league roster, partly because the Diamondbacks have solid players in positions he typically plays, like Ketel Marte and Eugenio Suarez. Team management is cautious about rushing him after losing a year of experience. However, Lawlar has performed well in Triple-A this year, with a stellar .336 batting average over 37 games.

Diamondbacks’ manager Torey Lovullo suggested that if Lawlar can get four games a week, he’ll develop effectively without getting overwhelmed. Yet, moving established players like Suarez and Marte out of the lineup even for one day could impact the team’s performance. Smith, who plays against righties, could make room for Lawlar as a designated hitter against lefties, which would keep the lineup balanced.

This plan could help keep veteran players fresh while providing Lawlar the experience he needs at the major league level. As he adapts to the big leagues, there may be future discussions about trading a player like Suarez, especially since his contract is up after this season.

The Diamondbacks are currently at .500, sitting fourth in the NL West. The addition of Lawlar might just be the boost they need to climb the standings. Drafted sixth overall in 2021, he has consistently hit well in the minors and displayed strong defensive skills.
