Exciting News: Dr. Todd Harris Appointed as New Vice President for Student Affairs

Morehead State University has welcomed Dr. Todd Harris as its new Vice President for Student Affairs, starting February 2. An experienced advocate for student needs, he brings a wealth of expertise from both public and private institutions. Before this role, he served as Vice President for Student Life at Hilbert College in New York.

Originally from Raleigh, North Carolina, Harris holds degrees from North Carolina State University and a Doctorate in Educational Leadership from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. His journey in student affairs began at Georgetown University, where he learned the ropes as the Associate Director of Residence Life. He emphasizes how foundational this role was for his career.

“Getting into housing and residence life is where you really learn the ins and outs of student affairs,” he says. Harris has since held positions at various colleges, each shaping his approach to leadership. He believes that experiencing different types of institutions has enriched his perspective: “Every place has its own way of operating,” he explains.

Dr. Jay Morgan, MSU’s President, praised Harris’s extensive background. “His commitment to enhancing student experiences will benefit the university,” he said. Harris also cherishes the moments spent at campus events, highlighting the joy these experiences bring him. “Seeing students create memories is incredibly fulfilling,” he adds.

Harris was drawn to MSU because of its community focus and vibrant campus life, especially showcased during events like Homecoming. “This university has a strong sense of pride and purpose,” he notes. As MSU continues to grow with new facilities, he is eager to foster connections with students and staff. He sees college as a transformative period in life, stating, “The heart of what we do is about the growth and joy of our students.”

In recent years, more institutions have focused on enhancing the student experience, with recent surveys indicating that 70% of students prioritize emotional well-being at their colleges. Harris aims to address this by ensuring that the campus culture not only supports academic growth but also nurtures personal development.

As he steps into this role, Harris is ready to embrace the challenges and opportunities ahead. His vision is clear: to cultivate a supportive environment that encourages Eagles to thrive.
