During Friday’s Nintendo Direct, Square Enix made some exciting announcements that fans of Final Fantasy 7 will love. The much-anticipated Final Fantasy 7 Remake is set to release on January 22, 2026, for both Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch 2.
After being exclusive to Sony platforms for years, this move marks a big change. Players on Xbox will benefit from Xbox Play Anywhere, allowing them to access the game on both console and PC with one purchase.
In a big reveal on X (formerly Twitter), Square Enix confirmed that not only will the remake be available, but the entire trilogy will launch on multiple platforms. This includes the upcoming Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, coming in 2024, and a third game that’s yet to be named. Historically, both the remake and Rebirth were PlayStation exclusives before they moved to PC, highlighting this significant shift towards inclusivity for gamers on different platforms.
As for user excitement, many fans took to social media to express their joy at finally getting these games on Xbox and Nintendo Switch. Some shared nostalgic thoughts about playing the original on PlayStation, while others can’t wait to explore these iconic stories anew.
Square Enix is also sweetening the deal for those who preorder Final Fantasy 7 Remake. Buyers will receive a free copy of the original Final Fantasy 7. This limited-time offer is already live on the Xbox Store, with the standard game priced at $40 and a Deluxe Edition available for $60, which includes some in-game extras.
In addition to this release, Square Enix is moving towards a more multiplatform approach. Gone are the days of puzzling exclusives. Last year, games like Octopath Traveler 2 launched on Xbox, alongside others reaching PlayStation. The company is set to release more titles on various platforms, including a remaster of Final Fantasy Tactics and a reimagining of Dragon Quest VII, which were also announced during the event.
This shift in strategy reflects a growing trend in the gaming industry where companies are focusing on wider availability for gamers. The goal is simple: to let more people experience their beloved titles. As these developments unfold, players will no doubt be watching closely for further updates.
