Indian Railways is gearing up to launch the first Vande Bharat Express train linking the beautiful Kashmir Valley with the rest of India. The inaugural journey between Katra and Srinagar is set for April 19, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi slated to flag it off.

In a later phase, a complete service from Delhi to Srinagar is expected to follow, likely kicking off in August or September. However, there’s an important detail for travelers: anyone journeying from Delhi to Srinagar will have to switch trains at Katra. Here, they will go through security and health checks, which are mandatory for safety.

Even though it’s a single ticket journey, everyone must get off at Katra. They’ll need to allow a waiting period of about 2-3 hours before continuing to Srinagar. This arrangement stems from the challenging terrain and contrasting weather conditions of the region, along with security concerns. Plus, passenger luggage will also be rechecked, adding another layer of safety.

Interestingly, this stop also helps passengers acclimate to the higher altitude as they move from the plains to the mountains. Sudden elevation changes can affect health, so this brief pause serves a dual purpose.

To make the wait more comfortable, Indian Railways is setting up special waiting areas at Katra station for travelers during this stop. The best part? Passengers won’t have to pay extra; everything is covered in one fare.

This initiative is a significant leap towards enhancing rail connectivity in Jammu and Kashmir, positioning the Vande Bharat Express as both a practical travel option and a symbolic link between the Valley and the national capital.

A recent survey revealed that around 70% of people in Jammu and Kashmir see improved rail connectivity as essential for boosting the economy and increasing tourism in the area. This underlines how important this new service could be for local communities.
