Since January 1, Optimum’s roughly 1 million customers in the New York City area missed out on watching their favorite teams, including the Knicks, Rangers, Islanders, and Devils. But now, they can tune in once again.
The agreement means that MSG Networks can offer lower-priced packages without their channels on the basic tier. The cost per subscriber has dropped from about $10 to $8, which is good news for those looking to save money.
MSG Networks will now be on the same tier as other popular channels like YES Network and SNY. In a joint statement, both MSG and Altice USA expressed their gratitude to fans for their patience during the negotiations. They emphasized that this deal is beneficial for both Optimum subscribers and fans.
However, MSG Networks is facing financial troubles, as they are currently in default on their loans. Their lenders, led by Chase, have agreed to delay any bankruptcy proceedings for the time being.
Governor Kathy Hochul even stepped in during the dispute, threatening public hearings if Optimum didn’t clarify how they were protecting affected customers. She described it as “unconscionable” for fans to be kept from the games they pay to watch.
On Saturday, she welcomed the news of the agreement but labeled it a “long-overdue step.” Hochul made it clear that she would continue to advocate for New York consumers, regardless of their favorite teams.
In the midst of the negotiations, MSG Networks ran an advertisement with legendary Rangers announcer Sam Rosen, who switched from Optimum to Verizon Fios due to the loss of games. He expressed his love for the games and encouraged fans to follow his lead.
With the deal finally done, Optimum subscribers can look forward to watching their teams during the crucial stretch of the regular season. It’s a win for fans who have eagerly awaited the return of their favorite sports programming.
