Indian Railways is gearing up to transform overnight travel with the introduction of its first Vande Bharat Sleeper Train. Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw highlighted this exciting news during a recent meeting in New Delhi. He believes this train is a significant milestone for long-distance travelers, with more passenger-friendly improvements on the way by 2026.
The Vande Bharat Sleeper Train has passed all necessary trials and certifications. It will officially launch in January 2026, with its inaugural trip between Guwahati, Assam, and Howrah, West Bengal. This new service promises faster and more comfortable overnight journeys for passengers.

This new sleeper service will enhance connectivity between Assam and West Bengal, linking key districts. In Assam, passengers can expect connections through Kamrup Metropolitan and Bongaigaon, while in West Bengal, the train will journey through Coochbehar, Jalpaiguri, and others. It aims to make travel easier for those commuting for work, education, or tourism in the region.
The Vande Bharat Sleeper Train will consist of 16 air-conditioned coaches, including 11 AC 3-tier coaches, four AC 2-tier coaches, and one AC First Class coach, accommodating around 823 passengers. Passengers can look forward to well-designed berths, modern suspension systems for a smooth ride, and enhanced safety features.
To add a local touch, food options will reflect regional flavors; travelers boarding in Guwahati will enjoy Assamese dishes, while those in Howrah can savor traditional Bengali cuisine. This attentiveness to comfort and taste will contribute to a more enjoyable travel experience.
According to a recent survey by the Indian Railways, 85% of passengers expressed a desire for more comfortable overnight travel options. The introduction of this sleeper train directly addresses that demand, aiming to make train journeys more appealing.
