Exciting News: Giants Activate Jerar Encarnacion – What This Means for the Team

The Giants welcomed back first baseman Jerar Encarnacion from the 60-day injured list before their game against the Padres. Luis Matos was sent to Triple-A Sacramento, bringing the team’s roster count to 39.

Encarnacion’s comeback is significant. He broke a bone in his left hand during Spring Training and had surgery that sidelined him for the first part of the season. Initially, he showed promise for playing time, especially against left-handed pitchers. He might compete for at-bats as the designated hitter and could take some innings at first base from LaMonte Wade Jr.

Wade hasn’t had the best season, struggling with a .167 batting average. Although he reached base well in previous years, his current performance is concerning. Giants manager Bob Melvin mentioned that Wade needs to improve to keep his starting position. “It’s going to be about performance. If he doesn’t get on track offensively, we’ll likely see more of Jerar,” he stated.

Encarnacion played 35 games last season, hitting five home runs and posting a slugging percentage of .425. His batting average sat at .248, which shows he has potential but needs to be more consistent. Meanwhile, Casey Schmitt is also seeing some time at first base but has hit only .195 in 15 games.

As the Giants push towards the trade deadline, their roster decisions will be crucial. Bryce Eldridge, a promising player still in the minors, is only 20 and hasn’t played in Triple-A yet. Another young talent, former top prospect Marco Luciano, is also being observed, although he has struggled at the plate in Sacramento with a .212 average over 52 games.
