Luxembourg is stepping up its efforts to support electric mobility, crucial for meeting its energy and climate goals. The government is extending the Klimabonus Mobilitéit aid scheme, which was set to end on July 1. This program is designed to help households and businesses transition to eco-friendly transport.
Environment Minister Serge Wilmes emphasized that this extension offers more security. It allows people to plan their investments in sustainable mobility with confidence.
Starting January 1, 2027, the government will introduce pre-financing support for individuals purchasing new electric vehicles. This is similar to the scheme currently available for solar panels, although details are still under wraps.
The support amount remains unchanged. In October 2024, the scheme was reformed to make it fairer. The premium for both sales and leasing of electric cars dropped from €8,000 to €6,000. The final subsidy will now depend on the vehicle’s power and seating capacity, reflecting the buyer’s financial situation.
To encourage longer use of electric vehicles, the holding period to benefit from the aid has increased from one year to three years. Additionally, a new grant of €1,500 for second-hand electric cars, over three years old, has been introduced. This aims to make electric options accessible to lower-income households.
For electric vans, the bonus has also decreased from €8,000 to €6,000, with the ownership period extended. Electric motorbikes will retain a subsidy of €1,000, while aid for cargo bikes has increased significantly from €600 to €1,000, now covering 50% of costs, excluding VAT. The bike bonus remains at €600 but is now limited to families receiving the cost-of-living or energy bonuses.
Despite these measures, some opposition members criticize the cuts, claiming they undermine saving efforts. Wilmes clarified that the government is willing to adjust subsidies based on market trends.
Recent data shows that electric vehicle sales have surged by over 40% in Luxembourg in the past year, indicating a growing acceptance of green transport. User opinions on social media often highlight the need for more charging stations and incentives to make the switch to electric smoother.
