A new adaptation of “V for Vendetta” is in the works at HBO, as reported by Variety. Pete Jackson is set to write the series, with James Gunn and Peter Safran from DC Studios as executive producers. Ben Stephenson and Leanne Klein are also involved, representing Poison Pen and Wall to Wall Media, both connected to Warner Bros. Television.
As of now, HBO and DC Studios have not commented, and there hasn’t been a response from Jackson’s team yet.
The original “V for Vendetta” comic was created by Alan Moore and David Lloyd, first appearing in the British anthology “Warrior” in 1982 before DC took over in 1988. The story unfolds in a dystopian Britain ruled by the oppressive Norsefire party. It follows V, a masked anarchist, as he attempts to dismantle the government with the help of Evey Hammond, a young woman he saves from the secret police.
If this series goes forward, it will add to HBO’s lineup of recent DC shows. One of their popular series is “The Penguin,” which features Colin Farrell and follows the events of The Batman. It won several Emmys, including Outstanding Lead Actress for Cristin Milioti. Additionally, HBO’s upcoming show “Lanterns” will star Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre as Green Lanterns Hal Jordan and John Stewart, expected to premiere in early 2026.
HBO has a history with “Watchmen,” another series based on a graphic novel by Moore. This show aired in 2019 and expanded the original story, although it was made before Gunn and Safran took over at DC.
Jackson, who is known for writing the Channel 4 series “Somewhere Boy,” has received a BAFTA nomination for his work and is also behind the upcoming series “The Death of Bunny Munro,” featuring Matt Smith.
The original “V for Vendetta” movie, released in 2005, starred Hugo Weaving and Natalie Portman. It was well-received and made over $130 million worldwide. In a nod to its 20th anniversary, Warner Bros. plans to re-release the film in theaters in November 2026.
Interestingly, Channel 4 once pursued a “V for Vendetta” TV series, but it never came to fruition. There was also a show called “Pennyworth,” focusing on Alfred, Bruce Wayne’s butler, which initially aimed to be a prequel to the V for Vendetta storyline. It was canceled after three seasons before those plans could develop.
With this new series, the legacy of “V for Vendetta” continues to capture imaginations, suggesting that themes of resistance and the fight against tyranny remain relevant today.
