Exciting News: Howard University Grad Receives Prestigious RWJF Health Policy Research Scholars Fellowship!

Howard University Ph.D. student Nailah Dillard has recently earned a fellowship from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation’s Health Policy Research Scholars Program. This national program supports doctoral students from historically marginalized backgrounds who can offer unique perspectives based on their lived experiences.

Dillard, who studies clinical psychology, shared her enthusiasm in the September 2025 issue of The Sway, a publication of the Howard University Graduate School. She plans to use this fellowship to explore health advocacy and criminal justice reform for people of color.

“I’m interested in how systemic inequities—like redlining, inadequate infrastructure, and over-policing—contribute to patterns of trauma and involvement with the justice system among Black and brown youth,” Dillard explained. Her research merges psychology, criminology, sociology, and environmental justice. She aims to reveal how structural oppression impacts mental health and decision-making.

According to Dillard, her work sits at a vital crossroads of service, research, and policy. “Academia is a powerful platform for leadership and mentorship,” she notes.
