Exciting News: Jacque Vaughn Joins University of Kansas as Men’s Basketball Assistant Coach!

Jacque Vaughn, a Kansas basketball legend, is coming back to his roots as an assistant coach. Coach Bill Self announced the news recently, and there’s a buzz of excitement around this return.

Vaughn isn’t just any coach; he’s the first former NBA head coach to join the staff at the University of Kansas. With over 15 years of NBA experience, he brings valuable insights from coaching stars like Kevin Durant, Kyrie Irving, and Victor Oladipo. This makes him a unique addition to a team aiming for excellence.

Coach Self expressed his enthusiasm, saying, “I have always admired how he has conducted himself and how he treats people.” Self believes Vaughn will be a fantastic mentor for players. His arrival comes after the retirement of Norm Roberts, leaving big shoes to fill.

Vaughn, who played at Kansas from 1993 to 1997, is remembered as one of the school’s greatest point guards. He holds an impressive record for assists, ranking third in KU history with 804. His senior year saw him earn All-American honors and he was also a two-time Academic All-American, showcasing his commitment both on and off the court.

Throughout his time at Kansas, Vaughn made significant impacts, including being named the Big Eight Player of the Year in 1996. His jersey was retired in 2002, marking his legacy at the school.

After college, Vaughn played 12 seasons in the NBA, being drafted 27th overall by the Utah Jazz. He had stints with several teams, including the San Antonio Spurs, where he was part of the championship-winning team in 2007. Vaughn has transitioned from player to coach, holding various roles including head coach for the Orlando Magic and interim head coach for the Brooklyn Nets.

His experience in the NBA could offer a new perspective to the Jayhawks. A recent study by the NCAA reports that the involvement of former professional players has a positive effect on college teams, boosting both player performance and recruitment.
