Moore, 36, recently wrapped up his role as the offensive coordinator for the Philadelphia Eagles. He played a significant part in their Super Bowl LIX victory against the Kansas City Chiefs. Before joining the Eagles, he had a notable career with the Dallas Cowboys as both quarterback coach and offensive coordinator from 2019 to 2022. After his time in Dallas, he spent one season with the Los Angeles Chargers.
Saints owner Gayle Benson expressed confidence in Moore’s abilities. She believes he can help rebuild the winning culture that the team and its fans expect. She also thanked Darren Rizzi for his contributions as interim head coach.
Moore isn’t just stepping into a coaching role; he faces challenges like uncertainty at quarterback and dealing with a tough salary cap situation. The Saints currently have the worst projected salary cap for the coming season, surpassing $51 million, according to Spotrac.com.
During the coaching search, Moore was one of several candidates considered by general manager Mickey Loomis. The Saints hadn’t made the playoffs since 2020, after a strong four-year run as NFC South champions. Moore’s experience and strategic understanding have made him an impressive candidate, with reports noting his intelligence and organization in interviews.
As the Saints move forward, they are also looking at potential coordinators to join Moore’s coaching staff. Brandon Staley, a former defensive coordinator for the Rams, is being considered for the offensive coordinator position.
