WSU Welcomes Kirby Moore as Head Football Coach
Washington State University has a new head football coach: Kirby Moore. He’s officially signed a five-year contract, making him the 36th coach in the program’s history. The announcement was made by Interim Athletic Director Jon Haarlow, with a press conference to introduce Moore set for December 16.
Moore’s appointment has generated excitement. WSU President Elizabeth Cantwell praised him, saying he’s the right fit to lead the team in the new Pac-12 landscape. “Our student-athletes will benefit from his commitment to both winning and their personal growth,” Cantwell noted.
Rooted in Eastern Washington, Moore hails from Prosser, where his father, Tom Moore, was a well-known high school football coach. Before joining WSU, he was the offensive coordinator at the University of Missouri. Under his leadership, Missouri posted an impressive 8-4 record in the 2025 season, earning a spot in the Gator Bowl.
Moore’s coaching capability has been exemplary. This season, he helped running back Ahmed Hardy become a standout, leading the nation in rushing yards per game and earning multiple accolades. Similarly, quarterback Brady Cook thrived under Moore, achieving significant milestones and helping the team succeed.
In addition to his coaching success, Moore has a rich training background. His time at Fresno State prepared him well, where he was instrumental in their Mountain West Championship win and was recognized for his play-calling abilities during key games.
The shift to WSU reflects a broader trend in college football. Coaches with fresh ideas and local ties are increasingly being valued for rebuilding programs. Moore’s innovative strategies and deep understanding of the game could be exactly what WSU needs in a competitive environment.
As he embarks on this journey, Moore’s focus on excellence extends beyond the field. He’s dedicated to uplifting the student-athlete experience and contributing to the broader community. His experience and local roots might forge a strong connection with fans and players alike.
In this new chapter for WSU football, expectations are high. Moore aims not only for on-field success but also to build a lasting legacy that resonates with the values of the university and the community.
Moore’s story is an example for aspiring coaches. His blend of local insight and proven track record positions him well for the challenges ahead in the evolving landscape of college football. As he settles into his new role, excitement simmers among fans, eager to see what the future holds for Cougar football.
