La Salle University has appointed Lyman Stebbins, Ph.D., as the new director of the Honors Program. He starts right away, bringing fresh ideas to enhance this longstanding program.
Dr. Stebbins aims to expand opportunities for research and creativity while building a strong community for students. Provost Cameron B. Wesson highlighted Stebbins’ dedication to academic excellence and student engagement. “He will help us grow the program and provide enriching experiences,” Wesson said.
Expressing his enthusiasm, Dr. Stebbins noted, “I look forward to guiding La Salle students in their journeys through the Honors Program and beyond.” His passion for lifelong learning and friendship will be key to his approach.
Since joining La Salle’s history department in 2011, Stebbins has showcased his expertise. He earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Dallas and both his master’s and doctorate from the University of Chicago, focusing on modern Britain and the Middle East.
The Honors Program features a unique component called The Triple. This program links courses in literature, history, and philosophy, allowing first-year students to develop strong bonds with peers and professors over two semesters. It also includes the Honors Lab, where students experience various cultural activities. Past labs have taken students to the Opera Company of Philadelphia and the famous Barnes Foundation art collection.
Changing educational landscapes today emphasize the value of experiential learning. According to a recent survey by the National Center for Education Statistics, students engaged in research projects are more likely to feel satisfied with their college experience. This reflects a growing trend that places student involvement at the forefront of academic success.
With Dr. Stebbins at the helm, La Salle’s Honors Program is set to not only continue its legacy but also adapt to meet the changing needs of students in an innovative way.
