The Los Angeles Chargers have brought back Chris O’Leary as their defensive coordinator. O’Leary previously served as the safeties coach for the Chargers and has an impressive background in coaching.
In 2025, while at Western Michigan, O’Leary’s defense had a standout year, contributing to a 10-4 record and winning the Mid-American Conference Championship—only the program’s fourth title. The defense ranked 9th in the FBS for scoring, allowing just 17.4 points per game. They also limited opponents to 305.5 total yards per game, placing them 19th nationally.
During his time with the Chargers, O’Leary helped the team excel defensively. In 2024, the Chargers led the NFL in scoring defense, allowing only 17.7 points per game, and were the top red zone defense, stopping 55% of opponent drives from ending in touchdowns. His work with star safety Derwin James Jr. resulted in James earning a Pro Bowl spot and second-team All-Pro honors. James was notably recognized as the AFC Defensive Player of the Month for his stellar performance in December and January, where he tallied three sacks and made several critical plays.
Before joining the Chargers, O’Leary significantly impacted the Notre Dame defense. In 2023, his unit finished in the top ten nationally for passing yards allowed, red zone defense, and total defense. Notably, he helped develop Xavier Watts, who led the nation with seven interceptions and received the Bronko Nagurski Trophy for being the top defensive player in college football.
O’Leary’s coaching journey began as a graduate assistant at Georgia State, where he coached both the defensive line and defensive backs. He also had experience at Florida Tech, further honing his skills.
On the field, O’Leary played at Indiana State University, where he made contributions as a wide receiver. He excelled in high school, earning accolades as a quarterback at North Vigo High School.
O’Leary, along with his wife Jessie, is raising two sons. His deep football background and knowledge of the game make him a valuable asset to the Chargers as they aim for greater successes in the coming seasons.
