After years of delays, the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art finally has an opening date. Set to welcome visitors on September 22, 2026, the museum is a project from George Lucas, the creator of Star Wars, and his wife, Mellody Hobson.
Hobson described the museum as a place for “the people’s art,” emphasizing that these stories reflect beliefs we all share. She believes that this art belongs to everyone.
Found in Exposition Park, Los Angeles, the museum will feature 35 galleries across 100,000 square feet. Its galleries will represent various aspects of the human experience, such as love, family, and community. With more than 40,000 pieces in its collection, it aims to be a significant hub for narrative art.
Lucas shared his thoughts on storytelling, saying, “Stories are mythology, and when illustrated, they help humans understand the mysteries of life.” The collection will feature works from renowned artists like Norman Rockwell, Beatrix Potter, Frida Kahlo, and comic legends like Jack Kirby and Alison Bechdel.
Additionally, the museum will include the Lucas Archives, showcasing models, props, and costumes from Lucas’s films. Recently announced pieces in the museum include Rockwell’s iconic “Age of Romance” cover and Frazetta’s cover for A Princess of Mars.
Lucas has been active in promoting the museum. He attended the San Diego Comic-Con this July, appearing alongside filmmaker Guillermo del Toro. In October, he was present at New York Comic Con, moderated by Martin Scorsese, highlighting the ongoing interest in this cultural venture.
This ambitious project, estimated to cost around $1 billion, has been in the works for over a decade. Initially planned for San Francisco and Chicago, the museum found its home in Los Angeles after overcoming various political and public challenges. Groundbreaking took place in 2018, but delays due to the pandemic have led to the rescheduled opening in 2026.
