High Point University Women’s Golf: A Rising Star in College Sports
High Point University (HPU) is excited to extend the contract of Lyndsey Hunnell, the head coach of the women’s golf team, for three more years. Dan Hauser, the Vice President and Athletic Director, praised Hunnell’s achievements, noting her incredible talent and success in building a competitive program. Under her leadership, the team has climbed the national ranks, now moving up over 117 spots and winning nine tournaments.
Since Hunnell took over in 2022, she’s made significant strides. She’s been recognized as the Big South Conference Coach of the Year twice, and she has coached several players to individual accolades, including three Big South Golfer of the Year winners. This year alone, the team shattered 14 program records. They went from ranked No. 177 to No. 60 in just a few seasons. Hunnell’s win percentage of 73.73% is the best in the program’s history.
In her first season, HPU reached the Big South Match Play Finals for the first time ever. Sarah Kahn, who was named Big South Golfer of the Year, also made history by being the first HPU golfer to finish in the Top-10 at an NCAA Regional. The following season, HPU saw even more success with players like Ella Perna and Anna Howerton earning individual honors.
Hunnell’s leadership has energized both the players and the university community. “We are building something special,” she shared, highlighting the team’s dedication and growth. She emphasized how grateful she is for the support from the administration and how HPU feels like home to her.
The past couple of years have shown remarkable improvement, with the team claiming five tournament wins in a single season. As they head into the 2025-2026 season, they’ve started strong by placing in the top three in all of their fall tournaments.
In a sport where consistency and teamwork are key, Hunnell’s innovative strategies and motivational approach have set a solid foundation for future success. As women’s golf gains popularity in colleges across the country, HPU is showing how dedication and hard work can elevate a program onto the national stage. Hunnell’s vision is clear: she aims for more championships and titles in the years to come.
