Exciting News: Matt Elliott Appointed as New UH Manoa Athletics Director!

Matt Elliott has been chosen as the new athletics director for the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa, thanks to the decision made by President Wendy Hensel. His appointment awaits approval by the UH Board of Regents during a special meeting set for June 16.

“I’m thrilled to welcome Matt,” said Hensel. She sees his extensive experience in Division I athletics and strong ties to Hawaiʻi as assets that will greatly benefit the university community.

Elliott comes to UH with 13 years of athletic administration experience at UCLA. Recently, he served as the Chief Strategy Officer, leading the Bruins’ move from the Pac-12 to the Big Ten Conference. He also created a detailed five-year strategic plan. During his tenure, he helped establish a master’s program for student-athletes, aiming to boost their post-graduate opportunities.

Since returning to Hawaiʻi in 2022, Elliott has held a position at the Hawaiʻi Community Foundation, focusing on policy and public affairs.

“I feel honored to join UH at such a critical moment in college athletics,” Elliott expressed. He looks forward to working closely with student-athletes, coaches, and fans to take the athletics program forward.

Originally from Framingham, Massachusetts, Elliott earned his BA from Amherst College and a JD from Northwestern University. His journey in Hawaiʻi began in 2005 when he clerked for a U.S. District Court Judge. He met his wife, Allison, who grew up in Hawaiʻi, during this time and has been deeply connected to the islands ever since.

With a base salary of $425,004 and potential performance bonuses, Elliott is expected to start no later than July 1, pending board approval.

A Thorough Search Process

The search for a new athletics director began in April and involved a 10-member committee supported by Parker Executive Search. The process attracted over 110 applications, highlighting the strong interest in UH’s athletics program.

Jack Tsui, co-chair of the search committee, noted that they prioritized candidates with Division I experience and local connections. This thorough search aimed to find someone who truly understands the values and challenges of UH.

Artie Wilson, a former UH basketball player and committee member, praised the dedication shown throughout the search, emphasizing the commitment to find the best fit for the role.

Community Reactions

Supporters in the community have shared positive feedback about Elliott. Micah Kāne, CEO of the Hawaiʻi Community Foundation, called him a remarkable leader who gathers people around common goals. Other notable figures echoed similar sentiments, highlighting Elliott’s strategic mindset and ability to manage complexity.

While Elliott steps into this role, UH Mānoa athletics continues to support more than 450 student-athletes across 21 teams. The program, currently in the Big West Conference, will fully join the Mountain West Conference by 2026.

Elliott succeeds Craig Angelos, who left the role in December. Lois Manin has served as acting athletic director in the interim.

In today’s rapidly changing collegiate sports landscape, Elliott’s experience at major programs and his local roots could offer UH a fresh perspective, ensuring that athletics at Mānoa keeps progressing.
