Minnesota United has just signed attacking midfielder James Rodríguez to a contract that lasts until June 2026, with an option to extend through December 2026. He’ll take up an international roster spot once he completes his medical checks and gets his P-1 Visa and International Transfer Certificate.
MNUFC Chief Soccer Officer Khaled El-Ahmad expressed enthusiasm about the signing. He said, “James is a player of unquestionable quality and experience at the highest levels. His creativity will strengthen our team. It’s about adding to our collective strength, not just relying on one player.”

Rodríguez is a well-known figure in global soccer. He joins Minnesota after playing for Club León in Liga MX. Before that, he wore the colors of famous teams like Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, and Everton.
His international career is impressive too. He has represented Colombia in various tournaments, including the FIFA World Cup in 2014 and 2018. He is set to be Colombia’s captain in the upcoming 2026 World Cup.
Statistically speaking, Rodríguez has made 122 appearances for Colombia’s national team, scoring 31 goals. His standout moment came in the 2014 World Cup, where he won the Golden Boot for scoring six goals. He was also honored with the FIFA Puskás Award for one of those goals.
Rodríguez’s journey started at Academia Tolimense de Fútbol in 2001. He kicked off his professional career at just 14 years old with Envigado FC. From there, he moved to various clubs, achieving significant success at each one. At FC Porto, he contributed to three consecutive league titles.
His tenure at Real Madrid (2014-2020) saw him net 37 goals and provide 42 assists over 125 games. He climbed to great heights, winning numerous prestigious titles, including two Champions League trophies. His loan period at Bayern Munich was also fruitful, earning him more accolades.
Throughout his career, Rodríguez has played in top divisions across Colombia, Argentina, Portugal, France, Spain, Germany, England, Qatar, Greece, Brazil, and now Mexico, tallying a remarkable 127 goals and 161 assists in 516 appearances.
This signing could mark a significant moment for Minnesota United, with hopes that Rodríguez will not only shine individually but help elevate the team and unite fans around their shared love for soccer.
