NASA is set to introduce its new astronaut class next month, and you can watch the unveiling live!
On September 22, at 12:30 p.m. EDT, NASA will announce the 2025 astronaut candidates during a livestream from the Johnson Space Center in Houston. You can catch the event on platforms like NASA+, Netflix, Amazon Prime, and NASA’s YouTube channel.
This new class comes from a competitive pool of 8,000 applicants. Once selected, these candidates will undergo about two years of training before they can embark on missions.
In addition to the astronaut announcement, NASA will hold media briefings on September 23 and 24 about the upcoming Artemis 2 mission. Scheduled for launch no earlier than April 2026, this mission will send four astronauts around the Moon. You can view these briefings live too, through NASA’s YouTube channel and social media accounts.
On the Artemis 2 mission, notable astronauts will include Reid Wiseman as commander and Victor Glover as pilot. Glover will make history as the first Black astronaut to fly on a lunar mission, while Christina Koch will be the first woman and Jeremy Hansen will be the first non-American to participate.
Here’s the briefing schedule:
September 23:
- 11 a.m. EDT: Mission overview with key NASA officials.
- 1 p.m. EDT: Science and technology briefing with project managers discussing mission specifics.
September 24:
- 10 a.m. EDT: Crew news conference featuring the Artemis 2 team.
In a world where diversity in space exploration is becoming more prominent, this mission highlights significant milestones. According to a 2022 survey by the Pew Research Center, about 52% of Americans support increased diversity in space agencies, pointing to a growing alignment between public sentiment and NASA’s goals.
