Exciting News: NC A&T’s Provost Tonya Smith-Jackson Steps Up as Chancellor of Rutgers University–Newark

Dr. Tonya Smith-Jackson has been named the new chancellor of Rutgers University–Newark. This marks an exciting new chapter for both her and the university. Currently the provost at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University (NC A&T), she will step into her new role on August 1.

Smith-Jackson has an impressive track record. At NC A&T, she has overseen significant growth. Under her leadership, the university introduced three new doctoral programs and launched North Carolina’s first bachelor’s degree in artificial intelligence. This school is notable for being the largest historically Black college and university in the nation.

Her efforts have not just been about new programs; they’ve also focused on increasing research capabilities. NC A&T has established three Centers of Excellence dedicated to cybersecurity, product design, and entrepreneurship. Smith-Jackson’s work helped the university gain recognition as an anchor institution, which highlights its vital role in supporting the community.

Before NC A&T, she spent 14 years at Virginia Tech, where she climbed the academic ladder from assistant professor to full professor in industrial and systems engineering. She also contributed to significant projects during her time as a program director at the National Science Foundation.

Her background in engineering and human factors gives her a well-rounded perspective. Smith-Jackson holds a doctorate in psychology and ergonomics, along with a master’s degree in psychology and industrial engineering. This blend of skills will serve her well in leading a diverse urban university.

In her own words, Smith-Jackson credits her approach to education leadership to her upbringing. “Inspired by my parents’ belief in education as a pathway to liberation,” she said, “I’ve dedicated my life to helping others obtain college degrees and upward mobility.”

Dr. William F. Tate IV, President-designate at Rutgers, praised her background. He believes her engineering expertise will enhance the connection between the university and the community it serves.

As higher education evolves, Smith-Jackson’s unique insights could help shape future pathways for students and faculty alike. Her appointment comes at a time when universities are increasingly expected to create impactful research and foster economic development.
