Great news for fans of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles! The beloved turtles are gearing up for a fresh start with a new live-action film franchise. Neal H. Moritz, known for his work on The Fast and the Furious, is in talks with Paramount Pictures to lead this exciting reboot. He’s not alone; Toby Ascher, his collaborator at Original Films, will also join as a producer.
This decision comes as Paramount is reevaluating its intellectual properties. Unlike other franchises like Transformers, Paramount fully owns the TMNT brand, giving them the freedom to explore its full potential. The last live-action turtle flick, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows, didn’t do well at the box office back in the mid-2010s, which caused a halt in live-action projects. To pivot, the studio focused on animation, resulting in the critically acclaimed Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, released in 2023.
However, not everything is smooth sailing. Recently, Paramount scrapped Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, a spinoff of Mutant Mayhem, midway through production. The decision was a major blow, with showrunner Christopher Yost confirming the cancellation on Threads, expressing disappointment but also pride in the show’s remaining episodes.
In a related development, another project called The Last Ronin, which was intended to be an R-rated film, has also been shelved. Originally, it was set to be a live-action/CGI hybrid directed by Ilya Naishuller. However, sources say the new management preferred to keep the franchise family-friendly for now.
Fans can look forward to a sequel to Mutant Mayhem, which is still scheduled for a September 17, 2027 release. This upcoming project is being produced by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, and directed by Jeff Rowe.
Insiders hint that Paramount aims to give TMNT a treatment similar to that of Sonic the Hedgehog, which has successfully made over a billion dollars at the box office. Moritz, who produced the Sonic films, is seen as the perfect fit to revitalize the turtles.
In a world where franchises often get stale, fresh insights and careful planning could breathe new life into the TMNT saga. With Moritz at the helm and a clear vision for the future, it will be interesting to see how the turtles evolve for a new generation.
