Ahead of this year’s Shri Amarnath Yatra, the Union Government is set to launch a direct train service between Jammu and Srinagar. This is great news, especially since bad weather can disrupt travel. The new Vande Bharat Express is scheduled to be inaugurated by Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh on April 30.
The Amarnath Yatra, a spiritual journey to the Baba Amarnath cave shrine, will take place from July 3 to August 28. It lasts 57 days and starts with a special prayer on June 29 to seek blessings from Lord Shiva.
The direct train service aims to ensure smoother travel for pilgrims, especially during harsh weather when the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway can become impassable. Currently, two Vande Bharat Express trains run between Katra and Srinagar. With the new extension, they will connect Jammu as well, making travel more accessible.
The introduction of rail links to Kashmir has been a long-standing demand. In June last year, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the Srinagar-Katra service, marking a significant milestone in connecting the region to the broader rail network of India. Recent reports indicate that the Vande Bharat service has gained popularity, carrying around 500,000 passengers in just seven months.
Interestingly, the launch of the Jammu-Srinagar train was previously delayed due to “unavoidable circumstances.” Despite the hold-up, the Railway Board’s commitment to extending services reinforces the importance of rail connectivity in promoting tourism and economic development in the region.
As travel becomes easier, we can expect more pilgrims to participate in the Yatra. This year’s increase in train services could encourage wider participation and enhance the experience for devotees, especially in the picturesque landscape of Kashmir. Travel experts predict that improved accessibility might not only boost pilgrimage numbers but also benefit the local economy significantly.
