Northwestern Michigan College has renamed the University Center to the “Boardman Lake Campus.” This change was announced on Thursday after a vote by NMC trustees during their regular monthly meeting.
For 30 years, the University Center hosted various university partners. It was established in 1995 to provide advanced degree programs in Traverse City, including bachelor’s and master’s degrees.
Current partners at the campus include Ferris State University, Grand Valley State University, Michigan State University, Central Michigan University, and Davenport University. They offer a range of degrees, from nursing to MBAs.
However, feedback from students and university partners suggested they wanted these programs moved to the main campus for better accessibility. This summer, all five university partners will relocate to the James J. Beckett Building on the main “Front Street Campus.” NMC President Nick Nissley emphasized that this move is about adapting to how students learn today, highlighting an increased demand for flexibility in education.
Nissley pointed out that students are looking for hybrid options and online support across multiple locations, not just in one specific place.
With the university partners leaving, NMC officially changed the building’s name to Boardman Lake Campus. This name aligns with the geographical naming system of NMC’s other campuses. The building will still house NMC’s business and human resources offices, extended education and training department, and other administrative departments. Notably, Greenspire High School leases a portion of the second floor until 2030.
Looking ahead, decisions regarding the future of the Boardman Lake Campus are still being developed. Nissley mentioned that options might include leasing more space, selling the building, or redeveloping it.
This shift comes at a time when higher education is evolving. A recent survey by the National Center for Education Statistics shows that online learning has surged over the past few years, especially post-pandemic. Understanding these trends is essential for colleges aiming to meet student needs effectively.
As NMC adapts to these changes, it highlights how community colleges can better serve students in this dynamic educational landscape.
