The world of Peaky Blinders isn’t finished yet. Creator Steven Knight has exciting news: the Shelby family’s story will continue in two new six-part series on Netflix and the BBC. Original star Cillian Murphy is on board as an executive producer, alongside Knight.
These sequels will pick up after the upcoming Peaky Blinders movie, which is currently in post-production and set to release next year.
Set in Birmingham in 1953, the new series explores the effects of World War II on the city. After being heavily bombed, Birmingham is now rebuilding with fresh hope. The Shelby family finds themselves caught in a fierce competition over the city’s major reconstruction project. The story promises to blend danger and opportunity in equal measure.
Production will take place at Knight’s Digbeth Loc. Studios in Birmingham, with Kudos and Garrison Drama at the helm. Alongside Murphy and Knight, other executive producers include Karen Wilson from Kudos and Jamie Glazebrook from Garrison Drama.
The original Peaky Blinders series made its debut in 2013 and quickly became a cultural phenomenon. It aired on BBC Two before transitioning to BBC One, winning a BAFTA for Best Drama Series in its fourth season. Over the years, it has expanded into various industries, including books, clothing, and even immersive theater.
In discussing the new chapter, Knight expressed excitement about telling a fresh story rooted in the backdrop of Birmingham’s recovery post-blitz. He revealed that a new generation of Shelbys will take center stage, promising an engaging narrative.
Netflix’s Mona Qureshi shared her enthusiasm, highlighting that Knight’s storytelling is unmatched. The anticipation is palpable as fans await this next journey into Birmingham’s streets and the Shelby legacy.
Lindsay Salt, BBC’s Director of Drama, called Peaky Blinders a game-changing show. She emphasized the show’s impact and her eagerness to see Knight’s scripts come to life.
A recent survey noted that Peaky Blinders has maintained a strong fanbase, with a 2022 poll showing over 60% of viewers expressing anticipation for the new content. This indicates how deeply the show resonates, evolving into a beloved part of modern TV history.
As the next chapters unfold, the Peaky Blinders series remains a testament to great storytelling, drawing audiences back into its complex and gritty world. The combination of historical context and present-day storytelling makes it an exciting subject for fans and newcomers alike.
