Defensively, his performance as a pitch framer has also slipped. After consistently ranking above average in past years, recent assessments show negative grades. Despite these concerns, the Phillies chose to stick with the familiar. Realmuto knows the pitchers well, which is a crucial asset as the team looks to maintain effectiveness on the mound.
Historically, the Phillies have been competitive, winning at least 87 games in the last four seasons and reaching the World Series in 2022. One has to wonder if relying on an aging core will continue yielding results. The team’s payroll now sits at approximately $281 million, pushing them into costly tax territories. Realmuto’s contract alone will contribute significantly to their tax implications.
