PHOENIX — The HonorHealth Research Institute (HRI) is setting out to change the face of biomedical research in Arizona with its new Center for Translational Science. This center is designed to take scientific breakthroughs and turn them into real-life solutions that help patients.
According to HonorHealth CEO Todd LaPorte, this initiative aims to enhance collaborations with universities, businesses, government agencies, and other healthcare organizations. “We want to make a significant impact on humanity,” LaPorte said.
Officials anticipate that the Center for Translational Science will open in the next month.
How will this center affect cancer research in Arizona?
HRI is already involved in many clinical trials that aim to assist patients with different health issues, including cancer, heart ailments, and neurological disorders. Dr. Michael Gordon, HRI’s chief medical officer, oversees five divisions that focus on:
- Cancer
- Neuroscience

- Gastrointestinal and bariatric issues
- A multi-specialty division that covers rheumatology and pulmonary medicine
Dr. Gordon explained that while each division operates independently, the Center for Translational Science will unite them. This connection will create a stronger support system, allowing researchers to collaborate across different fields.
By fostering collaboration, the center will help advance new treatments and improve how drugs are delivered to patients. “Scientific knowledge should not be confined. It needs to be shared and built upon,” Dr. Gordon noted. This sharing can lead to innovations that benefit more patients.
With a better grasp of the science behind diseases, researchers can enhance treatment methods, understand potential side effects, and improve healthcare for a larger number of individuals. “Our goal is to streamline the development of effective treatments,” he added.
