Google recently announced an exciting update: Pixel 10 users can now send and receive files with Apple devices using AirDrop. This feature covers the whole Pixel 10 series and is currently exclusive to these phones. Google’s spokesperson, Alex Moriconi, mentioned, “We’re bringing this new experience to Pixel 10 first before expanding to other devices.”
To use this feature, Apple device owners need to adjust settings to make their devices discoverable. This can be done for a limited time of 10 minutes. Once set up, Pixel 10 users can find the Apple device through Quick Share and initiate the transfer. On the Apple device side, accepting the transfer is just like any regular AirDrop request.
The process works the other way, too. For the Pixel 10 to receive files, it must also be set to “discoverable” mode. When an Apple user sends a file, the Pixel owner can accept the request, and the transfer begins seamlessly.
According to Google’s support documentation, this connection is secure as it is direct and peer-to-peer. This means your files don’t pass through a server, ensuring that your shared content remains private and unlogged. An independent security assessment from NetSPI supports this claim, emphasizing the security of the feature.
While this isn’t yet available for all Android devices, it’s a significant leap forward for Android users. AirDrop has long been a standout feature for Apple users, and now there’s a way to bridge the gap, making sharing easier for everyone involved.
A notable point is that Google has stated their desire to eventually collaborate with Apple to create a “Contacts Only” mode. This could enhance compatibility even further.
