La Flamita, a new Mexican restaurant, is set to open at 2100 W. Hopkins St. This location once housed Pizza House. Efrain Jimenez Mendoza, the owner, has run a food truck for years and is excited about this permanent spot.
La Flamita will offer a menu filled with Mexican favorites like tortas, tacos al pastor, and handmade huaraches. Customers can also look forward to chimichangas, birria, gorditas, quesadillas, and tacos wrapped in fresh tortillas. Meat options will include pastor, asada, chorizo, chicken, tripe, tongue, ground beef, and cabeza. Notably, they won’t serve alcohol.
Jimenez Mendoza bought the property earlier this year for $235,000. The restaurant will be a counter-service establishment, with no dedicated dining area. However, it has parking for easy pick-up.
The building has seen various tenants, including Haji’s Red Hot, which closed in 2020. La Flamita’s license application is currently under review by the Milwaukee Common Council, along with permits for plumbing and parking lot updates. If everything goes smoothly, they hope to open soon, with hours from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily.
For now, fans can catch the Tacos La Flamita food truck, which operates from a kitchen on W. Historic Mitchell St. Typically, it parks at 1920 W. National Ave. The food truck offers a wider menu, including burritos, tostadas, alambres, nachos, and sopes.
As the restaurant landscape evolves, community reactions have shown excitement. Social media buzz highlights what many see as a refreshing addition to Milwaukee’s food scene. In 2021, the National Restaurant Association reported that 79% of adults enjoy trying new cuisines, suggesting people are eager to welcome La Flamita.
For many local eateries, adapting is key. In a city where new food trends pop up quickly, La Flamita’s approach, rooted in authentic cuisine, may resonate well with diners looking for both quality and unique flavor profiles.
