Rajasthan is set to make history with India’s first maintenance depot for the Vande Bharat Sleeper train at Bhagat Ki Kothi. This project, under the North Western Railway (NWR), is estimated to cost ₹360 crores and will be developed in phases.
The depot will feature facilities for the maintenance of Vande Bharat Sleeper trains and other train models. Currently, it’s being built as part of the Technology Partner Scheme. This collaboration includes Indian Railways, Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL), and Kinet Railway Solutions from Russia, ensuring a modern, specialized setup.
The plan involves two phases. In the first phase, a covered area of about 1,200 square meters will be constructed, including a covered inspection bay with three pit lines, office space, a training center, and storage, at a cost of around ₹167 crore. It is scheduled to be completed by June 2026.
Phase two will add more capabilities, expanding the workshop area and creating advanced facilities for wheel maintenance, including a dedicated shed for wheel lathes. This phase has an estimated cost of ₹195 crore, with tenders already out for the construction of a workshop and a specialized testing lab.
Recently, the first Vande Bharat Sleeper train began service on the Howrah-Kamakhya route, and a second route is planned between KSR Bengaluru and Mumbai. These modern trains promise comfort and efficiency, redefining rail travel in India. With the establishment of this maintenance depot, the upkeep will likely improve, ensuring safer and more reliable services for passengers.
According to a recent survey, 78% of railway passengers prefer sleeper trains for long-distance travel due to enhanced comfort. As more such services and facilities emerge, Indian Railways aims to meet the growing demands of travelers and boost the economy through efficient connectivity.
