Ruben Östlund has kicked off filming in Budapest for his new movie, The Entertainment System Is Down. Excitingly, Connor Swindells and Lindsay Duncan have joined the cast.
This dark comedy takes place on a long flight from the UK to Australia. When the in-flight entertainment system fails, passengers must confront the unsettling reality of boredom.
The film features a star-studded lineup, including Kirsten Dunst, Daniel Brühl, Keanu Reeves, and Nicholas Braun, among others. Several talented actors like Samantha Morton and Tobias Menzies also play key roles.
Filming will last around 70 days and is expected to wrap up by May 2025. A real Boeing 747 has been specially acquired for the movie, providing an authentic flight atmosphere on set.
The Entertainment System Is Down is a collaboration among various production companies, including Plattform Produktion from Sweden and Essential Films from Germany. Additional support comes from BBC Film and several other European film organizations.
Funding for the project includes backing from the Swedish Film Institute and other national film boards. Major streaming services like Canal+ and Disney+ are also involved in financing.
World sales are being managed by Coproduction Office, and A24 has already secured U.S. distribution rights.
This film marks Östlund’s second foray into English-language cinema and adds to his impressive portfolio, which includes acclaimed works like The Square and Triangle of Sadness.
