Exciting News: Sundance Film Festival Makes its Move to Colorado! Discover the New Excitement!

The Sundance Film Festival is moving to Boulder, Colorado, after 40 years in Park City. This change starts in 2027, with a new 10-year contract confirmed. Boulder outshone many other candidates, including Cincinnati and Salt Lake City.

Robert Redford, founder of Sundance, expressed excitement about the move. He believes change is necessary for growth, emphasizing the festival’s mission to support new storytellers and engage audiences. While the festival has thrived in Park City, issues like rising housing costs and local frustrations over the influx of visitors made it less ideal over time.

In recent years, Sundance’s attendance has dropped. In 2024, about 72,840 people attended, a sharp decline from 116,800 in 2020. Factors like the pandemic and the cost of accommodations in Park City contributed to this reduction.

Finding a new home was not a quick process. Sundance considered 67 cities and focused on important factors like travel ease, available housing, and suitable venues. Boulder has good connections to Denver International Airport, making it easier for attendees to visit.

Boulder boasts a vibrant film culture, supported by the Boulder International Film Festival, which attracts over 20,000 visitors yearly. This existing audience may benefit the Sundance Festival as it transitions.

There are concerns about Boulder’s political environment. Utah has become increasingly conservative, affecting how the festival’s free expression message aligns with local policies. Recently, Utah lawmakers targeted LGBTQ+ rights, which raised questions about the festival’s fit in such an environment. However, Sundance leadership stated that politics weren’t a major factor in their decision to move.

Colorado’s governor, Jared Polis, welcomed the festival. He highlighted the positive impact on jobs and local businesses that Sundance will bring.

The festival will make its final appearance in Park City from January 22 to February 1, 2026. Sundance’s director, Eugene Hernandez, recognized Park City’s significance in the festival’s history but feels Boulder will provide opportunities for a promising future.
