Neon is set to start filming Bad Lieutenant: Tokyo this May. Renowned director Takashi Miike, famous for movies like Audition and 13 Assassins, will lead the project. The film will feature a talented cast, including Shun Oguri from Godzilla vs. Kong, Lily James from Pam & Tommy, and WWE star Liv Morgan.
This U.S.-Japan co-production is backed by notable producers such as Jeremy Thomas and Sam Pressman. Neon has plans to release the movie in North America and handle international sales at the Cannes Festival.
The screenplay, by Daisuke Tengan, reimagines a classic tale of corruption. The story follows Oguri’s character, a corrupt gambler in the Tokyo Metropolitan Police, as he faces challenges when an FBI agent (James) arrives in search of a missing politician’s daughter (Morgan). A killer from the yakuza underworld complicates their investigation.
Takashi Miike expressed his excitement: "We have a talented team in Tokyo. I’m ready to create something unforgettable." Producer Jeremy Thomas echoed these sentiments, citing Japan’s vibrant film landscape and their successful history there, evidenced by films like Grand Maison Paris, which grossed over $28 million.
Neon is fresh off an impressive awards season with Sean Baker’s Anora, which won five Oscars. They will also bring more titles to Cannes, including Sentimental Value by Joachim Trier and Alpha by Julia Ducournau.
Miike’s unique vision is highly anticipated, with Sam Pressman noting that the new adaptation will carry forward the themes of corruption and the complexities of human nature. Miike has directed over 100 films, building a strong following outside of Japan with hits like Ichi The Killer and Sukiyaki Western Django.
Shun Oguri is recognized in Japan for his performances in Boys Over Flowers and Weathering With You, while Lily James gained fame in Downton Abbey and recently garnered acclaim for her role as Pamela Anderson. Liv Morgan made headlines as the WWE Women’s World Champion.
This collaboration marks a new chapter in the Bad Lieutenant legacy and showcases the fusion of talent from both countries. As filmmakers continue to explore and innovate, audiences can expect rich storytelling and compelling characters.
