Children’s Nutrition Initiative in Childersburg, Alabama
In Childersburg, Alabama, the TCR Child Care Corporation is stepping up to ensure kids have access to healthy meals. They recently received a grant of over $430,000, and Kay Jennings, the organization’s executive director, is thrilled. She believes in the importance of providing young children with the best nutrition as they grow.
Jennings explained that feeding young children goes beyond just the meals—they’re crucial for family well-being. “Childersburg has limited resources,” Jennings noted, highlighting the community’s struggles with food access, which she describes as a “food desert.”
To make a difference, TCR has teamed up with Gerald Wallace, a retired NBA player, to build the new ALICE Community Center. This center will also host TCR’s kindergarten programs. With its own kitchen, TCR will now be able to cook meals on-site, allowing for more family involvement and better food planning.
With this new facility, TCR will also be able to serve more children, including those with disabilities, ensuring that every child gets the support they need. The grant will even support a second location in Sylacauga.
Looking ahead, the groundbreaking for the ALICE Community Center is set for October 13, 2025. This project represents a step forward not only for TCR but for the entire community, aiming to combat food insecurity and promote healthier futures for children.
