Cristo Fernández, known for his role as Dani Rojas in Ted Lasso, has made a surprising leap from acting to professional soccer. He’s signed with El Paso Locomotive, a club in the USL Championship, which is the second tier of American soccer.
Fernández’s journey to this point has been quite unique. He played youth soccer in Mexico but stepped away from the sport at just 15 due to a knee injury. Yet, the passion for football never really faded. This year, he even trained with the Chicago Fire’s reserve team in Major League Soccer. After a two-month trial, including a pre-season game, he earned his spot on El Paso’s roster.
In his own words, “Football has always been a huge part of my life and identity… the dream of competing professionally never truly left my heart.” This sense of determination resonates with many athletes who face setbacks but choose to pursue their passions regardless.
El Paso Locomotive, which started in 2018, currently sits fourth in Group B of the USL Championship standings. Coach Junior Gonzalez praised Fernández, highlighting his impact on the team’s culture and his potential to elevate their game. “Cristo is a great addition to our roster, adding another attacking threat to our forward line,” he noted.
Interestingly, this isn’t just a personal win for Fernández. It reflects a growing trend in sports where actors switch to athletic careers. Fans on social media have celebrated his signing, sharing excitement and support for his dual career path.
The USL Championship has seen increased popularity in recent years, drawing in higher attendance and viewership. According to reports, the league’s growth reflects a wider interest in soccer across the U.S., which is evolving rapidly. This environment gives players like Fernández a chance to chase their dreams at any stage of their lives.
His story serves as a reminder that it’s never too late to pursue what you love, even if it means taking an unconventional path.
