Exciting News: Tesla to Launch Robotaxi Service in San Francisco This Weekend!

Tesla is gearing up to introduce its Robotaxi service in San Francisco this weekend, according to an internal memo. The rollout could happen as soon as Friday, with some Tesla owners receiving invites to start using the service. Passengers will need to pay for their rides.

The Robotaxi will operate within a defined area in the Bay, which includes Marin, parts of East Bay, San Francisco, and extends down to San Jose. Initially, safety drivers will be present in the vehicles, ready to take control if needed.

Interestingly, the California DMV has noted that Tesla hasn’t applied for a permit specific to deploying driverless taxis. A spokesperson mentioned that they recently met with Tesla but didn’t clarify if a permit is required for this version of Robotaxi with a safety monitor on board.

Currently, Tesla holds a testing permit for its self-driving tech in California, allowing a driver to be present. Reports indicate that Tesla has significantly increased its testing in the state, tripling the workforce dedicated to autonomous driving in recent months. By December, Tesla had 224 test drivers registered along with 104 vehicles for testing.

While Tesla has a permit for providing transport services to employees, it hasn’t applied for a public commercial service permit as of mid-July. In Texas, where Tesla began its Robotaxi service last month, a few vehicles are already operational with safety personnel monitoring from the front seat.

During Tesla’s recent earnings call, CEO Elon Musk confirmed the presence of safety operators during the initial phase in the Bay Area, similar to operations in Austin. Here, Tesla has safety monitors ready to intervene if necessary.

Tesla’s latest financial report revealed a sharp decline in revenue, marking the steepest drop in ten years, which led to a drop of over 8% in its stock value.

In Austin, the Robotaxi service started with just over ten vehicles but has been expanded since. This invite-only approach is suspiciously similar to how many tech companies first introduce their new features.

To prepare, Tesla modified its Model Ys in Austin, adding specialized camera equipment and telecommunications features. Recently, Musk teased on X that the service would launch soon and acknowledged the company’s pursuit of regulatory approval in California, Florida, and Arizona.

Data show a growing interest in autonomous vehicles, with 69% of consumers expressing excitement about using self-driving services. This reflects a notable change from just a few years back when skepticism was more common.

Interestingly, recent research indicates that trust in self-driving technologies is increasing, especially among younger generations. They find the concept of Robotaxis convenient and exciting, revealing a shift in public perception.

As Tesla works on its future plans for Robotaxi, there’s a palpable sense of anticipation about how this may reshape urban transportation. Only time will tell how well the public embraces it.
