Exciting news for the Farmington community! The Farmington Food Co-op is set to open its doors in early April. This new co-op takes over the beloved Better Living Center at 181 Front Street, offering local produce, wellness products, and everyday essentials. The Better Living Center’s larger sister location in Lisbon will continue to operate, run by Wayne Drake.
The board is planning some great additions, including a cozy seating area by the salad bar. Customers can enjoy soups, salads, teas, and coffees. A standout feature will be a bulk bin section, allowing shoppers to choose how much they want of a product. This focus on customization is a big win for the community.
Amber Stone, the Interim General Manager, emphasizes the importance of this co-op. “When a business is locally owned, it becomes more than just a store. It’s a place where the community gathers around food and shared values.” Stone mentioned plans for community events like cooking classes and wellness workshops. These events aim to build a stronger community and share knowledge on healthy living.
While everyone is welcome to shop, lifetime memberships are available for $150. Members will receive a share of profits at the end of the year based on their purchases. There’s also a lower-tier membership for $50 to ensure everyone can join. Membership perks include exclusive deals and special sales.
Kate Turcotte, the current treasurer and a local cheese maker at Haymay Creamery, shared her excitement. “Co-ops play a crucial role in supporting local farmers and increasing access to fresh food. The Farmington Food Co-op will strengthen our local agricultural economy.” Her passion for the co-op’s mission shows the positive impact such initiatives can have on the community.
The co-op began in 2025 with 13 founding members, and more residents are welcome to join. Decisions are made collectively by the board, which includes members from Farmington and neighboring towns. “This store belongs to all of us. Together, we can shape it into something special,” the new website proudly states.
