While there are still questions about Russian players for the World Cup, NHLPA executive director Marty Walsh hopes they will return to competition soon. “They’re incredible hockey players,” he said, acknowledging that the situation is complex, tied to broader political issues.

Bettman explained that decisions regarding Russian players will depend on the International Olympic Committee’s stance for the Milan Games. The World Cup is organized by the NHL and the NHLPA without input from the International Ice Hockey Federation, making it an all-NHL tournament with at least eight teams expected to participate.

As for where the tournament will be held, Bettman mentioned a bidding process, which could include options in Europe. NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly noted that the Olympics offer a good framework for how the season might pause for the World Cup.

Canada’s captain, Sidney Crosby, shared his excitement, especially since NHL players did not participate in the last two Olympics. “It’s great for everybody to know they’ll see the best of the best,” he said.

Despite concerns, Walsh assured fans, “We’re going to the Olympics. There’s no obstacle.” An agreement is in progress, and they are optimistic about finalizing it soon.
