FAYETTEVILLE, Ga. — Tim Ream has been named captain of the U.S. men’s national soccer team for the upcoming World Cup. At 38, he could become the oldest American to play in a World Cup, breaking the record held by Fernando Clavijo since 1994.
Coach Mauricio Pochettino expressed his confidence in Ream. “He’s a great captain, on and off the field,” he said. Ream has been leading the team in 17 of his 24 matches under Pochettino. He expressed gratitude for the opportunity, saying, “This is more than a dream come true.”
Ream’s first match as captain will be a friendly against Senegal on Sunday at Charlotte’s Bank of America Stadium, his home ground. Pochettino joked about Ream’s leadership, affirming, “Tim is the captain, whether he plays or not.”
Ream isn’t the only leader on the team. Midfielder Tyler Adams, who captained the U.S. in the 2022 World Cup, reflects on leadership, stating, “It’s a privilege to wear the armband, but I lead regardless.”
Another important player is Christian Pulisic, known as “Captain America.” He has worn the armband during several matches but had to exit early due to injury in his latest game leading the team.
Ream and Pulisic are two of the most experienced players on the roster, with Pulisic earning 84 caps and Ream 80. Former U.S. forward Jozy Altidore highlighted the importance of having strong leaders, especially in a home World Cup setting.
The U.S. kicks off its World Cup journey against Paraguay on June 12 in Los Angeles, followed by matches against Australia and Turkey.
