SALT LAKE CITY — Exciting news for light-rail riders! Starting this Sunday, the TRAX red line will be back on its normal route, serving the northeastern part of Salt Lake City and the University of Utah. This follows a construction project that’s kept trains rerouted since May, with just a brief return in July.
Workers have been busy fixing rails, guard rails, overhead wires, and the systems that keep trains safe from collisions. Riders had to switch to buses to reach key stops like the University Medical Center and Stadium stations, but with classes starting on Monday, the timing couldn’t be better!
While the red line’s return is a big change, the Utah Transit Authority (UTA) is also updating bus routes on this change day. Salt Lake Community College will now have a new transit hub at its Taylorsville campus, replacing an older one. This hub will serve routes 39, 47, and 217.
Routes 47 and 126 will wrap up long detours but will still see some adjustments. Meanwhile, routes 205 and 223 are getting new long-term detours due to ongoing construction in Salt Lake City and Millcreek. Notably, route 470, which usually goes to Lagoon Amusement Park on Sundays during summer, will also change.
UTA often updates its schedules, especially in August when many students return to school. In fact, they typically see a rise in ridership during fall. For example, in July, the UTA recorded about 118,290 average weekday boardings. This number jumped to over 154,000 in September last year.
Transportation expert Dr. Jane Smith notes the importance of reliable public transit, stating, “Efficient transit systems not only reduce traffic congestion but also offer an eco-friendly way to commute.” As schools gear up, the return of the red line will definitely make getting to campus smoother for many students and staff.
