Exciting News: Two New Pickleball Courts Set to Open at Wier Park in West University Place!

A total of four pickleball courts will soon be ready for players at Wier Park in West University Place. City officials expect these upgrades to wrap up by May 31. Currently, there are two courts, but they’ll be restriped for two additional courts to accommodate more players.

The decision to expand was made by the Parks and Recreation board, following recommendations from the Tennis and Pickleball Committee. This shows how popular pickleball has become in the area.

To make room for the new layout, workers will remove the existing court markings and replace them with new ones. They’ll also modify the divider fence between the courts. Most of it will come down, leaving only the parts near the outer edges.

Historically, West University Place has been seeing a notable rise in interest around pickleball. City Council meetings have highlighted this trend since early 2024. John Cutrer, Chair of the Planning and Zoning Department, pointed out in an April meeting that people are increasingly drawn to the sport, reflecting a national trend. According to a recent survey by the Sports & Fitness Industry Association, pickleball participation in the U.S. increased by nearly 21% in 2022.

While the renovations take place, the tennis and pickleball courts will be closed starting May 22. However, the rest of the park will remain open for residents.

This upgrade not only enhances recreational options but also encourages community engagement through sport. With a grassroots movement in pickleball’s growth, it’s exciting to see how different localities adapt to meet the demand.
